Wollongong Endodontics is the Illawarra region's dedicated specialist endodontic practice and currently the only specialist endodontic clinic offering laser-assisted root canal treatment in the region. Patients and dentists across Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Dapto and the wider Illawarra are welcome — operating microscope and CBCT 3D imaging are used on every case.
The Illawarra stretches from the northern escarpment suburbs of Helensburgh, Thirroul and Bulli through Wollongong's CBD and university precinct, down the coast through Port Kembla, Warrawong, Shellharbour and Kiama, and inland through Figtree, Unanderra and Dapto. It is one of the most populous regions outside metropolitan Sydney — and historically one of the least-served for specialist dental care. Until Wollongong Endodontics opened, Illawarra patients needing complex specialist endodontic treatment typically had to travel to Sydney.
Today Wollongong Endodontics serves the whole region as a dedicated specialist endodontic clinic — receiving referrals from general dentists and self-referrals from patients across Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Dapto, Corrimal, Fairy Meadow, Figtree, Unanderra, Port Kembla, Warrawong, Albion Park, Bulli, Thirroul and Helensburgh. Every consultation is seen by an AHPRA registered specialist endodontist; every treatment uses the operating microscope as standard.
Our practice is at G04/38 Atchison Street, Wollongong NSW 2500 — central Wollongong, close to the hospital precinct and the Crown Street retail core.
Every Illawarra patient is assessed and treated with the same clinical toolkit — operating microscope magnification is used on every procedure, not as an optional extra:
Traditional root canal protocols use rotary instrumentation and chemical irrigation to shape and disinfect the canal system. Even with meticulous technique under the operating microscope, a proportion of root canal anatomy — lateral canals, accessory canals, deeper dentinal tubules — is physically inaccessible to files and to passive irrigation. The residual bacterial load is one of the most commonly cited reasons for post-treatment symptoms and long-term failure.
The Fotona SkyPulse Er:YAG laser with SWEEPS (Shock Wave Enhanced Emission Photoacoustic Streaming) directly addresses this limitation. The laser pulses through irrigant already present in the canal, generating photoacoustic shockwaves that propagate through the whole root canal system — reaching lateral canals, accessory canals and dentinal tubules. The clinical result is deeper disinfection, reduced reinfection risk and a gentler overall experience than conventional protocols alone.
Laser-assisted endodontic protocols remain uncommon in Australian general practice. Wollongong Endodontics is currently the only specialist endodontic practice in the Illawarra region offering Fotona SkyPulse laser-assisted treatment. See our dedicated Laser Root Canal Treatment page for a detailed clinical and patient-facing explainer.
A specialist endodontist in Australia has completed a Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Endodontics — typically three years of full-time postgraduate university training on top of a general dental degree, plus ongoing AHPRA specialist registration requirements. Clinical studies consistently report success rates of around 90–95% for root canal treatment performed under appropriate specialist conditions, with operating microscope magnification and CBCT imaging making a measurable difference on complex cases.
Illawarra patients choosing Wollongong Endodontics receive care from our specialist team, with the Fotona SkyPulse laser, operating microscope and CBCT imaging used on every case, plus same-week emergency access for patients in acute pain.
If you're a general dentist anywhere in the Illawarra region, we're set up to make specialist referral simple:
See Why Refer to Us and our Dentist Resources page for case submission guidelines and online referral.
Your first appointment is a comprehensive consultation — detailed history, clinical examination, pulp vitality testing, digital radiographs and (where indicated) CBCT 3D imaging. Clinical findings and treatment options — including whether laser-assisted treatment is indicated for your case — are discussed clearly, a written quote is provided, and your questions are answered before any treatment begins. Most consultations take 45–60 minutes. Written post-operative instructions are provided at every treatment visit.
We accept patients and referrals from across the whole Illawarra region — including Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Dapto, Corrimal, Fairy Meadow, Figtree, Unanderra, Port Kembla, Warrawong, Albion Park, Bulli, Thirroul and Helensburgh. Our practice at G04/38 Atchison Street is central Wollongong and reachable by car or South Coast Line train from anywhere in the region.
